Technology and industry became essential for our daily lives. Despite their advantages, they make our lives more toxic every single day. It’s not possible to completely avoid both if you don’t have a time machine. But you can try to maintain a more eco-friendly life. As Justmop, we love to share tips and recipes, we hope we can influence you to a more eco-friendly life.
Have you every heard of soap nuts? They are getting more trendy day by day especially among organic life lovers. Soap nuts are not a nut actually but a kind of berry related to lychee. Well, because of their hard shell nobody could imagine they are actually berries. These berries are Asia oriented and have been used for many cultures for centuries. They release saponin when they get wet and that is what cleans your laundry. Soap nuts are odorless, hypoallergenic, 100% eco-friendly and soften your laundry without fabric softener.
They are two ways of using these berries as laundry detergent.
1) In a sachet
Place 4-5 soap nuts in a sachet and toss it into your washing machine. Warm water helps nuts to release the saponin. But if you prefer to wash your laundry in cold water there is a resolution for that too. Soak the sachet of nuts in a cup of hot water for few minutes before using them. The best part is that you can use them again and again. They will last for 10 washes approximately.
There are few ways to understand if they are still good for use. Use your senses. Smell them, if they are smelling fruity then go on, you can still use them for another load. Touch them, if they are still slippery it means they have soap in them.
When you use soap nuts it makes your laundry soft naturally. There is no need for additional products. But if you feel like cleanliness is equal the flowery smell then you can use essential oils because soap nuts are odorless. You have to pick a very good quality of essential oil. You don’t want to ruin your machine nor your laundry while trying to appease the senses.
If you are used to wash your laundry with liquid detergent and don’t feel like changing it but still want a non toxic life you can definitely try this recipe. Pour 2 cups of water into a sauce pan and boil it. After the water boils add 4 or 5 soap nuts and reduce to a simmer. Simmer for 10 minutes and remove the pot from heat and let it cool down. Strain it with a piece of muslin into a bottle or jar, wherever you want to keep it. You will probably have less then 2 cups. Add more water until you have 2 complete cups of liquid. Now you can use your nuts once more and make one last liquid detergent. This time simmer 20 minutes as it will take a bit longer to get the saponin out of the nuts a second time. You can use 2 or 3 tablespoons per each load.
But after for both usage of soap nuts there is still life for them. You can make shampoo, body washes or all purpose cleaner.
DIY Laundry Soap
This one will take a bit more effort than soap nuts but you can try DIY laundry soap when you can not find soap nuts. It’s still better than commercial cleaning products. You need 2 bars of castile soap, 1.5 tablespoon borax, 2 cups of oxygen cleaner, essential oil of your taste. We recommend lavender castile soap and lavender essential oil. It will be great to get under the lavender scented sheets after a long day at work.
Start with grating the soap bars. Mix it with oxygen cleaner. Use another bowl to combine borax and 20 drops of essential oil. Mix them until there are no lumps. Now you can pour it into soaps and oxygen cleaner. Mix it together with a whisk until everything is combined. Store it in a jar and use 2 tablespoons per medium load of laundry.
DIY Liquid Laundry Detergent
You want to try DIY washing product but you don’t want to grate any soap or anything. Well this one is for you! But for this recipe you have to think big. You need 2 gallon bucket, 2 gallon water, 1/2 cup washing soda, 1/2 cup baking soda, 3/4 liquid castile soap, 30 drops of essential oil, a spoon to stir and if you can find 2 one gallon glass containers.
Pour washing soda into the gallon and add enough hot tap water to cover the washing soda. Stir it until it dissolves completely. Now add baking soda and again stir it well until it dissolves. Fill the bucket with hot tap water but leave a bit room on top. Add liquid castile soap to the mixture. We again recommend lavender scented soap but you can use an unscented one and add your favourite essential oil to give the smell. After adding the soap you can drop your favourite essential oil into the bucket. Mix well everything. You are good to go! Pour it into jar containers. Shake a bit before use the mixture. 1/3 cup of detergent will make your laundry fresh and clean.
It’s not that difficult to start a better life, don’t you think?
